TWO POSTS IN A WEEK!?!?!?!
I know, I'm awful at keeping up with blogging, mostly because I am so busy just working. Today's a day off from shows, yesterday was G&S day, we did HMS Pinafore for the matinee and Ruddigore in the evening. Both went VERY well and it was a fun day, filled with Gilbertian humor. It wasn't actually anything special like a celebration, it just happened that both the Gilbert & Sullivan shows were on the same day. Only the once in the whole of rep. Which is probably good, cause while they are the two shortest shows they're very chipper. Haha.
So that was Friday, today is Saturday and I'm taking it easy. Working some on straightening up the mess that is my room in hopes of making packing an easier process. Heh. Sunday is Of Thee I Sing, only two of those left! There's only one Pinafore left, and only one Ruddigore. I think two of everything else, counting the things showing today. We're getting to the final stretch!

Back to NC: 7 days, 18 hours, 32 minutes. plus several hours for driving.
Back to Wingate: 14 days, 7 hours, 32 minutes. give or take again a couple hours of driving.

ALMOST DONE!!

We're totally done with rehearsals, so that's good, Mondays are our off day this week and next. I went for a girl's shopping day this week which was very fun.

when ze cat's away, ze mice will play
OH MY WORD! It really has been ages since I updated this thing.
My apologies to any adoring fans who have been waiting anxiously for the last three weeks. Things have been very busy. As you may have noticed, the last time I posted was right before our season opened, and today has been my first fully free day since then.
The count as it stands today:
Time spent in Ohio: six weeks, five days.
Our season opened: three weeks ago.
Show #5 opened: today.
Show #6 opens: one week, two days.
Show #7 opens: three weeks yesterday.
Back to North Carolina: five weeks, four days.
Back to Wingate: six weeks, four days.
So, that's what's going on here. The 'hump party' was last Thursday, to celebrate the opening of show #4, our semi-halfway point in the season. I was talking about scenery for Fiddler and Sing but it only gets better as we go on. Venice, one of my shows off, has two major platforms and walls with columns forming archways angling the stage into a trapezoid... very intense, as well as a gondola up stage that gets pulled on and off by crew members. HMS Pinafore takes place on a ship, and we've got as much of a ship as you can get on stage, full with two doors on the main deck, a poop deck and mast and wheel. Both of those are an intense load in for the crew, but awesome sets indeed, I can't wait to see our last two shows. Oh, and Mlle. Modiste which opened today starts in a hat shop which has two majors walls and a drop wall with all kinds of feathered hats. Lots of good things are happening here in theater world.
We're in rehearsals this week for Helen of Troy, and that will open next Friday with a matinee. Tomorrow we do Fiddler again, and Venice in the evening, then Pinafore on Friday. Saturday is the 4th of July, and there's a concert in the square which most of the singers are a part of, they've got rehearsal that afternoon and the concert in the evening. Tech crews have that off, so that will be quite a fun night for us, just relaxing and watching fireworks.
So, that's a mini play by play of what's been happening. I wish I had more to say, but it's a lot of the same. We supervise the rehearsals, and get ready for productions, once productions go into tech we're polishing things up, making sure we have the right props, scenic things, wardrobe, etc. to get us going, and then the show is open. Once shows are open, we just come back again and do the same things, making sure notes are made for things that may have gone awry so they don't happen again. Mostly that part of it, going back and running the shows, can just be fun. In HMS Pinafore I get to shoot off a CO2 Confetti cannon. Twice. Of course, I also have to help clean it up at intermission and the end of the show, but still, it's quite fun. :)
Ummmm.... yeah. That's life here at OLO. July 21st is the opening of Ruddigore, and that is our last opening, then we're in rep for those three weeks. At this point, I still think Of Thee I Sing is my favorite show, very cheerful, very lovey, very fun. Pinafore is a close second with the cutesy fun, Gilbert & Sullivan were oh so witty. I'm hoping Ruddigore (another G&S) will be more of the same.
So things are still going, winding down slowly but surely, and I'm very excited to be in rep and then back in North Carolina. I've learned a lot in working with the different departments here at OLO, which is a change from Wingate where we are all the departments. The clarifications between props and scenic as well as other collaborations are very interesting. I'm feeling more qualified 'officially' as stage management, knowing what has to be done to run things in a professional company.
So that's all for now. I have the evening off on the 4th and 5th, and then a long week of shows. I'll try to post again before Ruddigore opens, haha. Maybe later next week. :)

searching for an old familiar face
Day 24: No rehearsals today. Back to the daily grind tomorrow, full with OTIS tech, OTIS run, and Fiddler run. I just love it, so great.

Our season opens: FRIDAY, four days.
Back to North Carolina: nine weeks, minus one day-ish.
Back to Wingate: ten weeks, minus one day.
We had our first tech rehearsal yesterday, for Fiddler, and I think it went very well. I've been in house on book, because as child wrangler, I'll just wait with them in their designated waiting room, until they're on stage. The children are wonderful, some are very soft spoken others, very outspoken. Haha. They're a fun bunch though, so I'm excited for that.
I'm really looking forward to shows starting, but also, the start of Ruddigore, which is my lead SM show. Our first rehearsal for that isn't till July 7th. Between now and then, we'll do 20 performances of our first four shows: 7 Fiddler, 6 Sing, 3 Venice, 3 Pinafore, and 1, Modiste will open, so five shows.
This past weekend was Wooster's Relay for Life which was super fun! I was off for the sitzprobe, so I went to the opening ceremonies and walked from 7:00 until 9:15 or so, when we stopped for the Luminaria presentation with the slideshow for Brian Woods of OLO, husband of our very own Jessie Wright Martin. She gave the event organizers lots of pictures of him and they showed them over a recording of him singing Schubert's Ave Maria (I think Schubert.....). It was a beautiful presentation. Beautiful voice. Just awesome. When all that ended we continued walking for a while, about half the group left just before or around midnight. I stayed till about 12:30, because I'd really gotten into the walking groove. :) It was a fun night all in all.
Saturday night was preview night which was wonderful. The long time patrons of OLO get to come out and see a showcase with numbers from each of the shows and then they get to meet and greet the cast. I didn't have to work the event so I got to rest in the afternoon (a good thing too, to catch up from Relay) and then see the show that night. We had a 'Wine and Cheese' party at Stevenson after the show which was a lot of fun. It was a good chance for all the cast and crew to just mix and mingle and it was a beautiful night, so lots of us were outside in the quad. Our choreo-master, Carol, came by with her dog which was a big hit with those who are missing pets at home for the summer.
And today is the company day off, no rehearsals for anyone, but all our tech staff and crew are working hard. Fiddler's set involves three rakes, that give the impression of a roof and take up a good chunk of stage. Of Thee I Sing also has platforms upstage, but they're rounded, and more presidental. So, completely different. :) Those have to be switched out for tech tomorrow, and will have to be switched again on dinner break for our last Fiddler run through before dress rehearsals. As well as everyday for the rest of this week as we're back and forth with these two shows through Saturday. I'm finding this whole system quite interesting, because you have to put everything away to set for a different show... It's very different from what I'm used to, but I like it so far.
I'll try to post again soon, in the next couple weeks. Other than tomorrow, I think....*hope* we have most mornings off this week, and Jessie is doing some Alexander sessions that should be neat. Constructive rest, here I come. :)

Operetta and Politics
WOW! It's been a week since I posted?! I really have no concept of time here, haha.
The count as it stands today--

Back to Wingate!!: eleven weeks, one day.
I am still very excited to be here and am discovering more things about town, as well as stage management tricks. As far as Wooster, I went out to lunch with Jessie (aka Dr. Martin) to this place called The Parlor. I had water, grilled cheese, and french fries, all for the college friendly price of $3.51 and I know you all know how wonderful that is. Can I get an AMEN!? Haha. Something I'm hoping to search for is Japanese food, cause wow, do I miss Tokyo Bistro. That'll be dinner my first day back in Wingate. Anyone interested? Let me know, I'll go multiple times for sure. That and Bojangles. Oh, Bojangles, how I miss your cajun goodness. I'm also looking at the church options for Sunday, see how things are up north. Certainly won't be the same as FBC Monroe. Speaking of, I am very excited to get to participate in Relay for Life AGAIN here in Wooster as part of OLO's team. I'll probably be signing up to walk the evening shifts, and I'm very excited.
On the job front, we've got run thrus for our third show tomorrow and by Sunday evening we'll be staging show number FOUR! The fast pace here is a little intense but it doesn't feel like work, I generally find it all to be fun. With A Night in Venice this week, Stacy's been the lead, since she'll be calling this show, and tonight Rachel and I helped her go through props for the run thrus today and tomorrow. We set all the rehearsal props backstage, and make sure they get reset for top of show. During rehearsal I was on book, calling lines and that sort of thing.
My favorite bits of the shows we've been doing are the politics in the world of opera. In Of Thee I Sing, not only do they elect a man whose party platform is true love, but they vote against impeaching said candidate who has caused international turmoil because he's an expectant father. In A Night in Venice, the senators pass a bill forbidding their wives to go to the Duke's Ball- not that they'd ever stand for such an order, as these women wear the pants. It's all very amusing. I'd very much like to vote for true love. Also, if I could be in any operetta, right now I'd want to be Mary Turner in Of Thee I Sing because she is fabulous, and makes corn muffins, without corn. Tee hee, how coy.
I guess that's all to tell right now. I bought myself a Wooster deck of playing cards, haha. I got some mail from my mom and grandma, and that was pretty exciting, again, if anyone else wants to spend the summer in a world snail mail, I'll facebook you my address so I don't just open it up to cyberspace. :) And if your mail includes a return address, I'll write back asap, there was only a two-day travel time for both pieces of mail I got from NC.

GLEE!
Okay, I'll admit... the title is in no way related to my time in Ohio, other than the fact that I was here when I first watched the pilot episode of Fox's new fall series "Glee" which was amazing, IS amazing... and I think all of you should at least check it out.
......... Well, what are you waiting for? Go watch Glee!!! Oh, well I guess you could read my post first. ;)
So, Ohio. Well, we started rehearsals last Saturday, and yesterday we did a run through of Fiddler on the Roof.... Yeah. We're not to the point of dress rehearsals or sets and full props and that sort of thing, but we're all staged and blocked. Yay, team! :) And now we step away from Fiddler for two weeks and fully stage two other shows in that time. So, I'm keeping on my toes, and learning a lot. Little stage management details I didn't know, and some big things, like what it's like to keep seven shows running at once? Well, we're not quite there yet, but I'm excited to get there!
Schedule wise, we pretty much keep to the 40 hour work week, since all the ASMs are hourly employees. We're struggling a little on that end, what with 54 hours of rehearsals a week, but I think it'll work out in the end. My show off is Fiddler, so I won't have to be backstage for any of those performances and then if all goes well I'll be calling cues for Ruddigore! Since this is my first real theater internship, I'm the Baby ASM, so I'm getting lots of tips from the other three on the team. Like I mentioned earlier, by July, when all our shows are up, we'll have at least one performance of each during the week, so that'll be fun-maybe just crazy, we'll see when we get there. If any of you can get up here for Fiddler- DO! Dr. Martin (who I am calling Jessie for the summer, how strange, haha.) is playing Fruma-Sarah....... if you don't know Fiddler, her big scene is the dream sequence and to sum it up, she's crazy. I just saw it for the first time last night, because I was off when they staged it and it is wonderful.
It's hard to believe, a week ago I was finishing packing to get ready for a full day's drive. Actually, right now I was watching Grey's Anatomy (AAHHH!) but you get the idea. :) Part of me thinks it was really yesterday, part of me thinks it was six weeks ago. Some days I think dinner is lunch, other days, dinner is three days late in coming. A lot of that happens in the back and forth from the theater. Morning, afternoon, and evening rehearsals, back and forth. Wooster (oo-as in book, not boot.. if you're a native) is very nice though, and like our beloved Wingate, has a 24hr Wal-Mart. (Just a note here, to Zack and Christian about 24hr Wal-Marts.... :| Shah.) But this one is actually closer to campus... I think. It feels closer. No US-74 traffic to battle through. But also, no self-checkout, and no CookOut.
Well... I guess that's everything, I got out of tonight's rehearsal early, in the effort to keep hours to 40, so I thought I'd drop in to say hello. :) I hope things are well in the great state of NC, or wherever the world you people are for the summer.

Welcome to Wooster!
I am here.
Yesterday was a looooong day on the highway. 300-ish miles on I-77. I like how in Virginia, they don't mess around and just tunnel through the mountains, but in West Virginia, you weave around the mountains to the point of seasickness. Haha... So, then between I-77 and Wooster, I drove through a handful of two stop light towns. Totally precious. I saw four people on horse drawn buggies... Like legit, driving from home to town, buggies. It was awesome. Like.... whoa. That and it was around the time elementary schools were letting out, so all the parents had walked to school to walk home with their kids, since everyone lives so close cause it's a small town. GAH! So cute.
Last night we had out opening session meeting and dinner at a local restaurant. My room is mostly settled, but I don't have that much stuff to settle. Lunch time now, after the Fiddler sing-thru this morning. Anyhow, I'm super excited for the rest of the day, even though I'm not sure what I'll be doing.
Jennifer is the production stage manager, and Rachel, Stacy, and I are the ASMs. We're each gonna get a day off each week, since we're hourly employees, and we'll get some other rehearsals off too. I'm heading back that way soon, so I'll post more later!

but it wouldn't be as nice as a summer in Ohio...
Hello friends!
So, today is Thursday, May 14th. Today, I am putting all my packed bags and boxes in a pile in the dining room designated as the 'put-this-in-the-car' pile. Tomorrow, I will wake up early, put these bags and boxes into my car, and drive away for my summer in Ohio! Let me tell you I couldn't be more excited. A drive of about seven hours, but don't forget the lunch stop for Bo*jangles, which I won't have for another, oh twelve weeks? .... I can already feel my body deteriorating at the thought of living without fried chicken and legendary sweet tea. :|
Despite losing my regular fix of southern foods, I am immensely excited to hit the road. I just know that I will learn SO much this summer, and I can't wait to meet the new people and see the new places, as I have never been to Ohio.
I made this blog, specifically to update you, my friends and family, on how my summer is going, and also to keep a record for myself so I don't forget anything. My schedule seems to be pretty packed- we're really going to hit the ground running with rehearsals beginning on Saturday- but I want to take as much time as I can to post as often as I can.
I hope you all have a fabulous summer, where ever it takes you, and I can't wait until we're all together again. :)
